How to design an electric car, according to Porsche design boss

The perceived wisdom goes that electric cars provide a blank canvas when it comes to car design, given that there’s no engine to define the whole packaging set-up. Not so, according to Porsche design boss Michael Mauer. “It is the packaging that defines the architecture of a car,” he said. “Passengers, luggage space, legal requirements – this defines the architecture of the car by as much as 70%,” leaving 30% for the designer’s pen. When entering new sectors with the Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan, Porsche has unashamedly looked to the…

Porsche Mission E While there have been lots of concept cars and production announcements, the first serious German competitor to the Tesla Model S and Model X won’t arrive for at least another year. Why Tesla Investors Should Hope Porsche’s Electric Car Is Great

It’s no secret that Porsche is going electric. The first all-electric Porsche is undergoing testing now, and it’s expected to go into production by 2019. It’s also no secret that Porsche’s racing-minded engineers have a particular rival in their sights: They’ve made it pretty clear that they’re hoping to show Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) a thing or two about making sports cars. Unlike some Tesla fans, I think the electric Porsche is likely to be very competitive with Tesla’s high-performance offerings, maybe uncomfortably so. But unlike some Tesla detractors, I don’t think that means that Tesla will be…

EXCLUSIVE: 2018 Porsche Cayenne prototype review

Porsche is nervous about this. In the past, it has invited the odd journalist to sit alongside a test driver while a car was being signed off, but never actually to drive. Or at least to be able to admit as much in print. I once spent consecutive nights on the same aircraft to have a few minutes in the passenger seat of a new 911 as it was signed off by Porsche’s top brass near Cape Town. This trip was rather more fruitful: I only had to go to Barcelona, I spent…

Porsche’s latest electric car chargers put Tesla to shame

The pair of 800-volt chargers installed in Berlin have the power to recharge car batteries at 350kW, giving its vehicle an 80% charge in just a quarter of an hour. The charging tech, which will come into play when the Mission E launches in 2019, is more than twice as powerful than the current 145kw Tesla Supercharger network. Porsche is also working with Ford and Daimler to create a network of thousands of 350kW charging stations throughout Europe (via IBTimes). Tesla, for what it’s worth, has promised to develop a supercharger…
